The new Rotunda Museum Project will offer 400 opportunities for people to learn directly from the specialists involved in the redevelopment of the museum.

Residents of Scarborough will also be asked to work with the design team and museum curators to shape the content of the new displays.

Who and What

Young people, students, museum volunteers, staff from the area’s museums and interested members of the public will all be encouraged to participate.

Opportunities will include learning from architects, museum designers, specialist museum conservators and other museum professionals.

Work placements, workshops and seminars provided by a range of specialists contributing to the project will illuminate the processes involved in the care and presentation of our heritage.

Young Design Squad

A group of young people with disabilities will explore with the Museum designers ways in which the new displays can offer information and enjoyment for everyone.

The Young Design Squad (YDS) ranging from teens to early twenties will ensure, as far as possible, that real thought and testing goes into meeting the needs of all visitors.

An Audience Development Assistant (ADA) will facilitate the work of the Squad. This a trainee post and, as part of their job, the ADA will study for an NVQ in Youth Work.

Schools

Six local teachers will work with the museum design team, over a period of three days, to advise on appropriate facilities and on the content and approach of the new displays. Training on the work and role of museums will be provided to the teachers to help them in this task. The teachers involved will then be invited back to ‘test run’ the new museum.
